If you've ever flown on a sunny day, I can almost guarantee that one of the first things you thought was “gosh, it's hard to see my screen”.That thought was likely followed up by a meticulously placed hand that cupped your screen in an effort to block the sun so you could see what the heck was going on.

It didn't take long for me to realize that I needed some type of glare protection when I was flying in sunny conditions. This was when I was first getting into drones and the thought of my wife seeing another drone-related purchase on our bank statement had me turning to DIY options for a monitor hood. I kid you not when I say that I proceeded to cut up a cereal box to create a make-shift sunshade. Did that work? I'm afraid that the flimsy cardboard was doomed to fail before I even started the project.

A little defeated but feeling like I was onto something with my homemade sunshade, I drove on down to not one, but three office supply stores in search for a large piece of thick cardboard that I could mold into the perfect solution. When it was all said and done I had about six hours into this project and I spent more on materials than I would have if I had just bought this hood on Amazon. Hey, you live and learn, right?

So, about the hood that I should have purchased in the first place. Overall I really love it, and for the price, it's a no-brainer. In fact, I liked the glare protection so much that I ended up using the hood to browse the internet while my wife and I hung out at the park; and no, there was no shortage of teasing from my wife for this. Here are some of the pros and cons I have after about 16 months of heavy use.

Pros

Pros

  • Great glare protection
  • Compact and portable
  • Foldable for storage
  • Perfect fit
  • Durable
  • Inexpensive
  • Keeps device cooler

Cons

Cons

  • Could be raised a little higher for more sun protection
  • The rubber piece that secures the hood to the device broke after 6 months (in the hoods defense, I had my phone case on which added bulk)
  • If not positioned correctly, the hood can get in the way of your device's buttons

I actually ended up gluing my homemade cardboard sunshade to the hood I bought on Amazon (a bit much, I know) to have an extended hood. It works great, but it's bulky and not easy to transport, so I have another hood that I throw in my bag when I'm on the go.
